Algerian Riyad Mahrez was in spectacular form for Leicester City on New Years’ day with a goal and an assist in their 3-0 English Premier League win over Huddersfield Town on January 1.

Mahrez opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with a superb demonstration of his technical ability, coolly steering an awkward dropping ball into the far corner from a tight angle.

Seven minutes later he set up Islam Slimani with a precise though-ball and his countryman dinked a cool finish over Jonas Lossl.

Marc Albrighton cored Leicester’s third goal in the 92nd minute to hand them a convincing win.

Now the question turns to whether Mahrez will stay at Leicester City with numerous clubs interested in signing the player during the January transfer window.

The Algerian, whose contract expires in the summer of 2020, put in a transfer request last May, but remained with the Foxes after Roma had a final bid of more than £27 million rejected.

If it were up to Leicester manager Claude Puel, he would keep Mahrez at the club.

“It was a fantastic game for Riyad against Huddersfield. I like this player and I'd like to keep our best players,” said Puel.

“We will ask him the question.”
