Napoli’s Algerian fullback Faouzi Ghoulam could be set to make an earlier-than-anticipated return from injury later this month.

The Fennec Foxes defender has been out of action since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a UEFA Champions League clash against Manchester City in November 2017.

He was expected to be sidelined for at least four months, but new reports in Italy suggest that the player could return for the Serie A leaders as soon as January 21.

This is the date on which the Italian top flight championship resumes (it is currently on its winter break), with the first game seeing Napoli visit Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia to take on Atalanta.

Ghoulam was operated upon by renowned knee surgeon Pierpaolo Mariani, and La Repubblica reports he could return for the clash against Atalanta.

The final word on whether Ghoulam is available for selection will go to Doctor Mariani, who will subject the player to a thorough examination before clearing him to return.
