Morocco’s final Group A match against Sudan at the 2018 African Nations Championship on Sunday night was marred by clashes between supporters of Wydad and Raja Casablanca.
According to Moroccan daily newspaper Al Akhbar, supporters of the clubs clashed during and after the Atlas Lions’ goalless draw at the Stade Mohamed V, with several people arrested by the police.
Website Le 360 reports, “The clashes were initially rather the order of invective exchanges, [but] things quickly degenerated.”
Most people arrested were released after a few hours in police custody.
The clashes reportedly started after Raja supporters began chanting slogans against their club president, which provoked the mockery of Wydad fans.
CHAN organisers will hope there is no such repeat when Morocco face Namibia in the first quarterfinal at the Stade Mohamed V this coming Saturday evening.
