Despite their failure to lift the 2018 CAF African Nations Championship tournament in Morocco, the Nigerian Super Eagles received massive support ahead of the final.
The final encounter was played on Sunday in Casablanca where coach Salisu Yusuf’s men succumbed to a 4-0 drubbing by the Atlas Lions.
Apart from the support from the faithful fans back home, people such as former President Atiku Abubakar stood behind the team as well as senior striker Odion Ighalo.
The China-based striker with Yatai Changchun posted a message on Twitter wishing his fellow countrymen the best of luck and praised them for a job well done in the tournament.
Although they lost the match, the Nigerians managed to reach their highest finish at the showpiece as runners-up for the first time.
Going back home, they will have to lift their heads high and learn a few things, taking nothing away from the Moroccans who were at home and were fantastic during the competition.
The players have brought pride to the nation and will now focus on the Nigerian Premier Football League as some will hope to impress coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in less than five months.
