Swallows FC failed to secure a win as they lost 3-1 to Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday afternoon at Dobsonville Stadium.

Although the Dube Birds held their own and scored through Tshepo Mashigo, they exited the Ke Yona competition.

On the other hand, Andrea Fileccia's brace and Mxolisi Kunene's secured a spot for the Team of Choice in the last 16.

Maritzburg had a bright start and Fileccia bagged an early goal in the second minute as the Belgian easily tapped the ball in, beating Vusimuzi Ntkinga.

Swallows battled for the ball in the midfield as they wanted an equaliser and had good build ups, but Bongani Mnguni’s powerful shot went over the cross bar in the 20th minute.

United were under pressure and Tshepo Mashigo hit Bongani Mpandle’s left post from close range in the 22nd minute.

The Birds would find reprieve in the 34th minute when Mashigo showed his strength in the box to beat Mpandle from close range and made it 1-1.

Coach Isaac Mphasane’s side came back stronger after the break and Bonakele Mngomezulu saw his attempt sailing inches over the cross bar.

After 10 minutes of action, Ntikinga’s brave goalkeeping would deny Fileccia in a one-one-one situation in the box against the run of play.

With 11 minutes to go, Siyanda Xulu forced Ntikinga to produce a superb save from a header which came off a well-drilled corner.

Fadlu Davids’ men had an upper hand in the dying stages, but the regulation time failed to produce a winner and the Ke Yona encounter went into extra time.

Early into extra time, Filleccia was alert in the box when he completed his brace as Swallows’ defence lost concentration, leaving Ntikinga with no chance to deny him.

The Premier Soccer League side continued to show their experience in the second half of extra time.

Kunene made it 3-1 with a powerful shot in the box to ensure they secure a spot in the next round.

United will now join AmaZulu, Cape Town City, Ubuntu Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United in the last 16.
