Saturday 10 February saw 12 first leg, preliminary round matches in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup staged across the continent, featuring big home wins for Egypt’s El Masry and Petro de Luanda of Angola.

El Masry were in action in the last kick-off of the day, claiming a 4-0 victory at home to Zambia’s Green Buffaloes thanks to goals from Islam Salah, Aristide Bance, Mohamed Koffi and Islam Eissa.

Petro played in mid-afternoon and romped to a 5-0 win over Malawi’s Masters Security, with a hat-trick from Toni sandwiched by opening and closing goals from Tiago Azulao and Dinei respectively.

Tunisia’s Ben Guerdane were awarded a 3-0 win over South Sudan’s Al Hilal Juba, while CAF club debutants Cape Town City - who are managed by former South African striker Benni McCarthy - won 1-0 away to Swaziland’s Young Buffaloes thanks to a strike from Nana Akosah-Bempah.

The Cape side were one of just two away winners on the day - the other was DR Congo club AS Maniema Union, who defeated AS Mangasport 1-0 in Franceville, Gabon, through a late goal from Agee Basiala.

The return leg matches will be staged next midweek, February 20-21, with the 22 aggregate winners advancing into the first round.
