Bidvest Wits overcome Golden Arrows

Bidvest Wits beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, the Clever Boys climbed up to 10th spot on the league standings, while Abafana Bes'thende moved down to 13th place on the table.

The visitors dominated the match from the start with Arrows forced to sit back and launch quick counter attacks.

The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute after the Abafana Bes'thende defence was exposed.

S'fiso Hlanti played a good cross for Frank Mhango, who scored with a header to make it 1-0 to Wits.

The Clever Boys were oozing with confidence and Hlanti tried to pick out Mhango again, but Arrows were able to clear their lines.

However, Wits were awarded a penalty in the 40th minute after Trevor Mathiane had handled the ball inside the Arrows box.

Lehlohonolo Majoro then converted from the spot-kick to make it 2-0 to Wits heading into the half-time break.

The visitors were awarded a penalty 14 minutes into the second-half after Lerato Lamola was fouled inside the Wits box.

Arrows striker Knox Mutizwa's effort from the spot-kick hit the upfront and the visitors cleared their lines.

Wits were struggling to contain the hosts, who awarded another penalty in the 74th minute and Limbikani Mvaza scored from the spot-kick to make it 2-1.

Arrows pushed for a late equalizing goal, but Wits stood firm at the back and they emerged 2-1 winners on the day.

Wits striker James Keene and Arrows midfielder Jabulani Shongwe were shown red for their respective actions in the closing stages of the game.
