Tuesday’s CAF Champions League action saw three teams - ES Setif, Williamsville AC and Al Hilal - advance into the first round of the competition.
Algeria’s Setif came into their away match against Central Africa Republic side Olympic Real de Bangui with a big 6-0 lead and managed to play out a goalless stalemate to ease into the next phase.
Things were a lot more tense in Abidjan, where Ivorian hosts Williamsville AC scored a last-gasp goal to defeat Stade Malien 1-0 on the day and take the tie 2-1 on aggregate - though they would have advanced on on away goals had the game ended without score.
In Omdurman, Al Hilal needed to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Liberia’s LISCR and duly claimed an emphatic 3-0 win, thanks to two first-half goals from Mohamed Bashir and a later strike from Sharaf Ali Shiboub. The Sudanese giants progressed 3-1 on aggregate.
The three aggregate winners join Saint George - who enjoyed a walkover - in the first round, which will be played next month and sees the entry of seeded teams Wydad Casablanca, Al Ahly, Etoile Sahel, TP Mazembe and Mamelodi Sundowns.
A further 22 preliminary round ties will be completed on Wednesday, February 21.
