Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu returned to Newcastle United’s starting line-up this past weekend.
The Black Stars attacker, who has been used more as a substitute in recent weeks by manager Rafael Benitez, was handed a starting berth for the Magpies’ Premier League match at Liverpool on Saturday evening.
Newcastle put in a decent performance, but were ultimately outclassed by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who scored their goals via African stars Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
Atsu played the full 90 minutes, as did Senegalese teammate Mohamed Diame, but they unable to pull United back into contention.
The result saw Newcastle stay two places and two points above the relegation zone, though that could change if Crystal Palace claim a surprise win over Manchester United tonight.
Atsu will hope his showing against Liverpool was enough to retain his starting place for their next clash, a must-win home clash against fellow strugglers Southampton on Saturday, March 10.
