The Zambian national team coach Wedson Nyirenda has explained his decisions on team selection ahead of the Four Nations tournament which will also involve South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
The tournament will be hosted by Chipolopolo at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola and the coach has explained the logic behind calling seven foreign-based players.
Nyirenda wants to take advantage of the four team tournament to keep the team together and asses the progress.
”We need to be together as a team. It would have taken too long to wait for our next FIFA window which is in September,” said Nyirenda.
“I think it is a good idea to use this tournament to gauge how all our players are performing and where they are lagging behind so that we can work on it.
”We want to achieve co-ordination after the tournament. Our programme has been different the previous teams.
“We have been very active over the past one year. We have been holding three day camps every month which we will continue despite having a team because we are unearthing a lot of new talents.”
Meanwhile, Zambia will miss striker Patson Daka who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury and has been replaced by Ronald Kampamba.
