Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar has admitted that he didn’t know he was going to return to Porto for this season following his spell at Turkish club Besiktas.

The 26-year-old spent last term on loan at the Istanbul-based club and helped them win the Super Lig title with 12 goals in 27 league appearances.

There was speculation that Besiktas would turn the loan into a permanent transfer, but Porto opted to bring the player back home and he has been a key figure in their impressive season thus far.

“I had no idea I would return to Porto when I was on loan at Besiktas last season,” the Indomitable Lions striker told the Portuguese press.

“Sergio Conceicao [Porto’s manager] has my mind. He convinced me to return to Porto. I then signed the contract until 2021.”

Aboubakar has endured a lean run of late, with the goals drying up compared to his prolific form early in the season, but he insists that winning with Porto is all that matters.

“It does not matter if I have not scored for five or ten matches. The important thing is that the team becomes champions at the end of the season. Winning and being the champion is the most important thing.”

Aboubakar will hope to return to scoring form when Porto play away to Belenenses in their next league clash on Monday night.
