The group stage draw for the CAF Confederation Cup was held in Cairo on Saturday afternoon, throwing up four intriguing pools for the continental competition.
Group A certainly appears to be the ‘group of death’, containing three former African champions in the shape of Raja Casablanca (Morocco), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast) and AS Vita (DR Congo), as well as current Ghana Premier League champions Aduana Stars.
Nigerian heavyweights Enyimba find themselves in Group C alongside Mali’s Djoliba, CARA Brazzaville of Congo and Ivorian upstarts Williamsville AC.
Group D has a distinctive East African flavour, with Algeria’s USM Alger the odd one out in the mix with Kenya’s Gor Mahia, Rwandan contenders Rayon Sports and Tanzanian giants Young Africans.
Group B features Al Masry – the only Egyptian team remaining in the competition – Moroccan debutants RS Berkane, Sudanese powerhouses Al Hilal and Mozambican hopefuls UD Songo.
The group stage will begin with Matchday 1 fixtures on the weekend of May 4-6 and conclude with Matchday 6 on the midweek of August 28-29. The top two teams from each group advance into the quarterfinals.
