The Egyptian FA have announced that the Cairo derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek will be officiated by local referees.
The grudge match between the Red Devils and the White Knights is usually handled by foreign referees, as it is one of the fiercest rivalries in world football.
However, the 116th Cairo derby, which will be played in the last round of the current Egyptian Premier League season on April 26, will be assigned to locals.
“EFA chairman Hany Abou-Rida believes that it will be a great opportunity to honour Egyptian referees in the derby, especially that there are highly efficient Egyptian referees who can manage this game,” said Essam Abdel-Fattah, head of refereeing committee.
“Any success achieved by Egyptian referees is a success to Egyptian football,” he added.
It should be noted that Egyptian Gehad Greisha will be one of six African referees at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
