Moroccan attacking midfielder Zakaria Labyad says he only ever wanted to leave Utrecht for Eredivisie rivals Ajax.
The 25-year-old is still on the books of Utrecht as they head into the second leg of their Europa League playoff final against Vitesse this weekend, but he is set to leave the club for the Amsterdan giants once the season is complete.
“The news broke quite early that Ajax and FC Utrecht were in agreement regarding my transfer and I spoke with the club regarding the best time to break the news and we decided yesterday [Monday] in order to give clarity to the FC Utrecht supporters,” said the Moroccan.
“I am really happy with my transfer to Ajax. They are the biggest club in the Netherlands with fantastic supporters. I am also grateful to FC Utrecht for giving me the chance to play for them also I also want to thank my teammates and manager too.
“I also had contact with PSV Eindhoven but I made it clear from the start to FC Utrecht that I only wanted to go to Ajax.
“I spoke to Erik Ten Hag yesterday and he wished my luck ahead of the FC Utrecht v Vitesse Arnhem match.”
