Madagascar stunned Mozambique 2-1 in the first 2018 COSAFA Cup Group A match at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win takes Barea to the top of Group A standings, while the Mambas are placed fourth on the table.

It took only seven minutes for Madagascar to take a surprise lead through Dax after the Mozambique defence was exposed.

The attacker opened the scoring for Barea with a great right footed strike to make it 1-0 to Madagascar.

The Mambas dominated the opening stages of the match despite being a goal down, but Madagascar's defence looked solid.

Abel Xavier, the Mozambique coach, decided to make an early change a few minutes before the half-hour mark.

Chico was brought in to replace Mano as the Mambas looked to level matters, before the half-time break.

However, the last chance of the first-half fell for Lalaina, the Madagascar attacker in the 33rd minute.

Lalaina was unfortunate as his his effort hit the post and stays out as Mozambique survived a scare.

The score was 1-0 top Madagascar at the interval.

The Mambas deservedly levelled matters a few minutes into the second-half after dominating the game.

Lusi was the man, who hit the back of the net to make it 1-1 for Mozambique with the Madagascar defence caught ball watching.

However, Madagascar did not sit back and defend after conceding as they pushed forward in numbers.

Barea managed to restore their lead through Toky, who hit the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Madagascar in the 62nd minute.

The Mambas then pressed Barea in search of another equalizing goal with time running out.

Telinho came close to equalising for Mozambique, but his shot hits the crossbar with Madagascar defence invaded.

Ultimately, Madagascar won 2-1 on the day after containing Mozambique in the closing stage of the game.
