Mozambique claimed a 2-1 win over Seychelles at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Thursday evening, but it was not enough to prevent their exit from the 2018 Cosafa Cup.
The Mambas finished second in Group A of the regional tournament on six points, one adrift of Madagascar, who beat Comoros 1-0 in a concurrent game to seal top spot and book a place in the quarterfinal against South Africa this weekend.
Mozambique took control of the game from the early minutes and it was no surprise when their pressure brought a mistake in defence from Seychelles, with striker Luis Miquissone fouled in the box to earn a penalty.
The attacker brushed himself off and took on the spot kick himself, easily slotting the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jerome Dingwall in the 11th minute to give the Mambas a 1-0 lead and rack up his fourth goal of the competition.
Just past the midway point of the first half Mozambique missed a great chance to double their lead, with Edmilson’s cross picking out an unmarked Dayo, but he put his shot over the crossbar.
On 36 minutes Dayo had another opportunity to extend the Mambas’ advantage, but after being played in on goal by Miquissone he was only able to brush the outside of the upright with his effort on goal.
Dayo was once again a threat to the Seychelles goal early in the second half and he appeared to have made it 2-0 in the 49th minute when he found the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out for hand-ball by the referee.
The Pirates had offered little in attack in return to the pressure placed on them by Mozambique, but in the 52nd minute they claimed a surprise equaliser, with Elijah Tamboo getting on the end of a lofted cross to score at the far post and make it 1-1.
Mozambique were rocked by the goal, but gradually reasserted their ascendancy and in the 73rd minute they went back in front, with Jeitoso providing a fine finish for his second goal of the tournament and a 2-1 lead.
