Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Thabo Nthethe has joined Chippa United ahead of the new 2018/19 Premier Soccer League season.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic skipper will now play his football with the Chilli Boys next season and will compete against the likes of James Okwuosa and Frederic Nsabiyumbva.

Nthethe has fallen by the wayside at the Brazilians and has struggled to get regular game time as he looks to revive his career.

He fell down the pecking order since the arrival of Bangaly Soumahoro and Ricardo Nascimento, as well as the resurgence of Motjeka Madisha.

The move follows reports last week that the veteran defender would be heading to the Port Elizabeth-based club for the upcoming season.

Chippa's Lukhanyo Mzizi confirmed the news to the SABC Sport on Monday night.

"We have signed Thabo Nthethe from Sundowns. He's our player now. He's very excited to be coming to the Port Elizabeth," Mzizi told the public broadcaster.

Nthethe is believed to have signed a one-year deal with an option to renew for another year.

The 33-year-old leaves the Brazilians on the back of a mere two appearances in all competitions in the previous campaign.

During his three-and-a-half-year stay with the Brazilians, ‘Mr Cool’ won several major trophies with the Tshwane giants.

On the other hand, he helped Pitso Mosimane's men to lift the 2016 CAF Champions League, 2017 CAF Super Cup, the Telkom Knockout as well as three Absa Premiership league titles.
