Lesotho defeated Madagascar 1-0 in the 2018 COSAFA Cup third-place playoff encounter at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday.

The win sees Likuena finish third in the competition, while Barea settled for fourth spot.

Likuena saw most of the ball in the opening stages of the game and they nearly to broke the deadlock just one minute into the encounter.

Lesotho forward Masoabi Ntoko had a chance to score, but his effort was blocked by the Madagascar defence from close range.

However, Nkoto was not to be denied in the 10th minute when he fired home from close range to make it 1-0 to Lesotho following a quick attack by Likuena.

Madagascar then pushed forward in numbers in search of the equalizing goal with Lesotho happy to sit back and launch quick counter attacks.

Dax found some space on the edge of the box and the Barea striker forced Lesotho goalkeeper Likabo Mphuti into a low save in the 24th minute.

Lesotho head coach Moses Moliehe made an early change when he pulled out Jane Thabantso and he introduced Mabuti Potloane on the half-hour mark.

Barea kept pushing and Mikka had a chance to score in the 37th minute, but the attacker placed his effort wide of the target as Lesotho survived another scare.

Lesotho then stood firm at the back until the match referee blew the half-time break and they were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Madagascar dominated the second-half as they searched for the equalizing goal, but they were struggling to create cut chances with Lesotho defence looking solid.

Mphuti was called into action on the hour-mark and he gathered Jaotombo Bourah’s cross with ease as Likuena continued to defend their narrow lead.

Kopano Tseka was introduced in the 70th minute by Lesotho head coach Moses Moliehe as Likuena looked to hold on to their lead in the closing stages of the game.

Both teams launched late attacks, but they could not score, and ultimately, Lesotho emerged 1-0 winners over Madagascar.
