New Orlando Pirates signing Abel Mabaso says he is excited by the challenge of playing for the Soweto giants.

The former Chippa United midfielder was one of nine new players announced by the Buccaneers earlier this month, joining Brilliant Khuzwayo, Ben Motshwari, Asavela Mbekile, Paseka Mako, Meshack Maphangule, Linda Mntambo, Vincent Pule and Kudakwashe Mahachi in moving to the club.

“I was told by the club [Chippa] that Pirates are interested and they asked if I was also interested in moving, so I told them ‘yes, it’s an opportunity that does not come often’. I want to take up the challenge,” Mabaso is quoted by Kick-Off.

“It’s a big team and a big institution and there’s a lot of expectations from players. It’s a club that has a rich history of success and I am aware of that. You are expected to win every match and every match is a big game.

“I was excited, which means there was something right I was doing for them to be interested in me.”

Mabaso added that he is looking forward to the competition in Pirates’ squad as they look to compete for both domestic and continental trophies next season.

“It’s a strong squad, which is good because we need to be competing on all fronts. You need to have the depth, so it’s a good thing to have competition,” the player explained.

“It will help us to push each other to do well and support each other for the benefit on the club. That’s the most important thing.”
