Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has revealed that they struggled to understand ex-coach Steve Komphela’s tactics.
Khune said they could not understand what the former Amakhosi skipper wanted from them as players.
The Soweto giants struggled under Komphela as they finished three seasons without a trophy.
Chiefs, though, have now announced his successor in Giovanni Solinas.
‘Itu’ remains optimistic that the players will adjust well to the tactics of the new Italian boss as the club ended a three-month search for a new coach.
Although the new coach watched from the stands on Saturday as Chiefs defended their Maize Cup trophy after beating Buya Msuthu and Free State Stars, he could be on the bench this coming weekend.
The Soweto giants are up against Mamelodi Sundowns in the inaugural Shell Helix Cup at the FNB Stadium.
“He [Giovanni] told us his philosophy and how he wants us to play on and off the ball‚” Khune said as quoted by the Times Live.
“We struggled a bit under coach Steve because a lot of us couldn’t adjust to what he wanted from us as players.
“We have to go back to winning trophies. That is our culture. We as players told ourselves that we do not want to be remembered as the generation that broke the record of not winning trophies.”
“The team has been under pressure for the last three seasons. We just need to win trophies for the club. For the past three seasons we haven’t been celebrating.”
