Goal from Jacques Tuyisenge, Ephram Guikan's brace and Mwinyi Haji saw Gor Mahia beating Young Africans 4-0 in their third CAF Confederation Cup Group D match at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Wednesday evening.
Resulting from this defeat, Yanga remain at the bottom of the table with a point, but will now hope to collect maximum points in front of their home crowd on Sunday, July 29 in Dar es-Salaam.
Although Gor had an upper hand in the opening 10 minutes dominating the ball possession, the scores remained unchanged at 0-0.
Two minutes later, the hosts nearly broke the deadlock when Ephram Guikan forced a fine save from Rostand Jehu, who closed down the angle very well.
The Tanzanians also forced a corner in the 17th minute but failed to convert from a header as the hosts cleared their lines.
However, Jacques Tuyisenge broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when he pounced on Samuel Onyango’s cross from the right wing, as the Yanga defence was caught napping.
In their response, Young Africans were awarded a set piece in a promising area in the 41st minute, but Yohana Mkomola failed to direct his effort at goal as it sailed wide.
K’Ogalo displayed a good inter-passing game in the heart of the park before setting up Guikan, who could not miss from close range to double their lead on the stroke of half time.
Fresh from the tunnel, the hosts were dealt a massive blow when Tuyisenge had to be sacrificed due to an injury.
However, the coach brought on Mustapha Francis, who nearly made an immediate impact after his shot was saved by Jehu at the second attempt in the 58th minute.
Just after the hour mark, Mwinyi Haji conceded an own goal as they succumbed from pressure, the midfielder’s header beat his keeper on the far post from a cross.
In the last four minutes, Guikan would complete his brace as the visitors failed to pick him up after receiving a perfect pass from the midfield, making it 4-0.
The win takes the Kenyans to number two in the group with five points behind USM Alger, who beat Rayon Sports 2-1 on the same day.
