Djoliba AC suffered a major blow to their hopes of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup after they were beaten 1-0 by CARA Brazzaville at the Stade Alphonse Massemba-Debat on Sunday afternoon.
The result sees the Congo side move to the top of Group C on six points, while the Malians drop to fourth on four points. The status of the pool will change later in the day when the other match between Enyimba and Williamsville is played in Abidjan.
CARA enjoyed the early dominance and claimed the lead after just 14 minutes, with Racine Louamba getting the better of Djoliba goalkeeper Adama Keita.
The Brazzaville hosts were the dominant side through the remainder of the first half but struggled to find a way past Djoliba’s defence, leaving the score at 1-0 at the interval.
The Malian side’s hopes of making a comeback in the second half were dealt a major blow on 73 minutes when Mamadou Coulibaly received a straight red card, reducing the visitors to 10 men.
CARA were able to hold out for the remainder of the match and claim a potentially crucial victory.
The teams will return to Confederation Cup action on August 19, with CARA at home to Williamsville AC, while Djoliba will welcome Enyimba to Bamako.
