Mamelodi Sundowns could well have been handed a lifeline in their pursuit of Al Ahly forward Phakamani Mahlambi.
The Brazilians were heavily linked with a move for the former Bidvest Wits forward, but saw their chances go up in smoke following an injury to Junior Ajayi.
The Nigerian's misfortune opened the door for Mahlambi who was ineligible to play for the Africans giants as they had exhausted their quote of foreign players.
Sundowns, though, could well be back in for the 20-year-old forward with the Egyptian club reportedly weighing up their options after the striker skipped the club's training on Friday.
There is no clarification as to why Mahlambi missed training, but the club have since announced that they have fined the South African.
Sundowns are eager to sign the attacker following Percy Tau's move to English Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.
