Polokwane City will chase an upset win over Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns when the teams meet at Peter Mokaba Stadium on 7 August 2018, kick-off at 19h30.
Polokwane opened their 2018/19 campaign on a low note as they were beaten 1-0 at Limpopo rivals Black Leopards on August 4. Karabo Tshepe’s goal proved decisive in the derby.
Rise and Shine struggled to claim wins at home last term, recording three wins, nine draws and three defeats for a haul of 18 points as hosts.
Sundowns’ defence of their Absa Premiership title began with a 1-1 draw at home to Kaizer Chiefs on August 4. They needed a penalty from Ricardo Nascimento after going behind early on.
The Brazilians’ away form in 2017/18 was outstanding, as they recorded 10 wins four draws and just one defeat for a haul of 34 points on the road.
In head-to-head stats, Polokwane and Sundowns have met in 10 league matches since 2013/14. The Brazilians have claimed five wins compared to three for Rise and Shine, while two games have been drawn. The Limpopo side has recorded two wins and three defeats in their five matches as hosts in the rivalry.
Last season Polokwane completed a league ‘double’ over ‘Downs, winning 2-1 in Tshwane in the first half of the season and 3-2 in the return game. Former Brazilians player Rodney Ramagalela scored three goals for City over the course of the two matches.
