Esperance head coach Khaled Ben Yahia was pleased with his charges’ performance despite suffering a narrow defeat to Al Ahly.

The Tunisian champions succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Egypyian giants Al Ahly in the 2018 CAF Champions League Group A match at the Stade Mohammad V in Tunisia on Friday.

Morocco international Walid Azarou scored the only goal of the match in the first-half for Al Ahly, who replaced Esperance at the top of the Group A standings.

“We played an excellent game and played the way we wanted to. Al Ahly had two counter attacks in the first-half,” Ben Yahia said.

“Our intention was to keep the ball away from their players to avoid their swift counter attacks.

Esperance’s Group A rivals Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC beat Township Rollers 1-0 in Uganda on Saturday.

However, both teams have been eliminated from tournament which means Al Ahly and Esperance have both booked their places in the quarter-finals.

“Unfortunately, we conceded a goal while our player was receiving treatment as we were outnumbered,” he continued.

“Overall, I’m very satisfied with my players and the performance they gave. They were disciplined, tactic-wise and performance wise.

“Defeat is always painful, especially against Al Ahly. But we have to keep working and keep moving forward.”

Esperance will take on Botswana champions Township Rollers away in their final Group A game next weekend.

While Al Ahly are scheduled to face former Ugandan champions KCCA at home next weekend. They will win the group if they secure a win over KCCA.
