Despite playing to a 1-1 draw against Zambia’s Zesco United in their final Group D game of the CAF Champions League at the Dag Hammarskjöld Stadium, Tunisia’s Etoile Sahel qualified for the knockout stages of the continental competition on Tuesday.

The result, combined with Primeiro de Agosto’s 2-1 win over Eswatini’s Mbabane Swallows in the other Group D game on Tuesday, sees the Tunisian side finish top of the standings with 12 points.

The draw for Zesco ends their Champions League campaign as they finish in third place with six points while Primeiro de Agosto finished second with nine points.

Swallows finished at the bottom of Group D with one win and only four points to their name.

The match itself at Dag Hammarskjöld Stadium saw Zesco start like a house on fire as they took the lead only eight minutes into the game following a deadly finish from Lazarous Kambole, 1-0.

Matters went from bad to worse for Etoile Sahel who saw goalkeeper Makram Bediri leave the field injured in the 20th minute and replaced by Achraf Krir.

Zesco controlled the remainder of the half, but struggled in the final third and could not add to their tally before the half time break.

Etoile Sahel regrouped a bit in the second half and started seeing more of the ball.

The Tunisians pushed forward and were rewarded for their efforts in the 70th minute when Rami Bedoui scored the equaliser, 1-1.

Both sides threw players forward in the final fifteen minutes of the tie, but neither could find a winner as the match ended all-square

Zesco United (1) 1 (Kambole 8’)
Etoile Sahel (0) 1 (Bedoui 70’)
