Morocco head coach Herve Renard has explained his relationship with his captain Medhi Benatia.
Benatia, who is on the books of Italian giants Juventus, was left out of Morocco's squad for their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier (Group B) Malawi by Renard.
“Between Mehdi Benatia and me, there is of course no problem. He is someone I really appreciate," Renard said on Morocco World News.
"When you are a coach, you call your captain, you ask him where he is in his training, you know like me that he had a training [with Juventus] where he does not have all the time to play.
The former Zambia and Ivory Coast coach went on to explain that Benatia wanted to focus on having a good season with his club.
“As long as I’m there with the Moroccan national team, the door will always be open because he has brought us a lot," the French added.
"And if it is otherwise, it’s part of a coach’s life or a player’s career-making decisions that are sometimes difficult."
Three goals from Youssef En-Nesyri (brace) and Hakim Ziyech helped Morocco overcome Malawi 3-0 in Casablanca on Saturday.
