Despite playing to a goalless draw, Guinea and the Central Africa Republic still top Group H of their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Guinea top Group H of their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign following a slender 1-0 win over Central Africa Republic at the Stade 28 Septembre on Sunday night.
The result, combined with Cote d’Ivoire’s 2-1 win over Rwanda in Group H’s other match also on Sunday, sees Guinea top of the standings with six points from two games.
CAR and Cote d’Ivoire are joint second in Group H with three points while Rwanda are last with zero points.
The match itself on Sunday at the Stade 28 Septembre did not produce much in the way of goalmouth action with neither team venturing too far forward in attack.
Guinea did control the flow of play early on and were encouraged by the support of the home crowd, but their passing in the final third as they squandered possession.
In fact, the only real threatening attempts on goal went the way of CAR in the opening half but the match entered the half time break locked at 0-0.
Both teams pressed forward a little more in the second half, but with the same result as neither could create a significant opening.
Finally, eight minutes from time Guinea managed to find the winner thanks to a fine strike from Seydouba Soumah which handed the home side the 1-0 victory.
