A goal ten minutes from time by Mahmoud Benhalib handed Moroccan side Raja Casablanca a 2-1 win over Congo’s CARA Brazzaville in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Debat on Sunday.
Being the away team Raja will take a serious advantage into the second leg at the Stade Mohammed V next week Sunday.
The first half was a cautious one from both teams with neither venturing too far forward in attack as they took a timid approach to the game.
Consequently, goal scoring chances were few and far between in the opening half as both sides squandered possession in the final third.
The second half, though, was a much more entertaining affair with Soufiane Rahimi finding the back of the net for Raja a minute after the break, 1-0.
Brazzaville, however, were not going to go down without a fount and began mounting a bit of a comeback but they struggled to penetrate the Raja defence.
That was until the 71st minute when some swift play from the home side resulted in Cabwey Kivutuka finding the back of the net to make it 1-1.
Brazzavilles joy was short-lived when Raja re-took the lead thanks to a fine strike from Mahmoud Benhalib in the 80th minute which saw the away side claim a 2-1 win.
CARA Brazaville (0) 1 (Kivutuka 71’)
Raja Casablanca (0) 2 (Rahimi 46’, Benhalib 80’)
