Gabon thrashed a hapless South Sudan side 3-0 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group C match at the Stade d'Angondjé in Libreville on Friday.

Despite the win, the Panthers remained third on the group standings, while the Bright Stars also remained fourth on the table.

The Panthers were looking to return to winning ways having drawn 1-1 with Burundi at home in their previous Group C game last month.

While the Bright Stars were desperate for their maiden win in their Group C campaign having lost 3-0 to Mali at home.

It took 28 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock and it was Denis Bouanga, who hit the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Gabon.

The visitors were able to contain Gabon and the score was 1-0 to the hosts at the interval.

The Panthers continued their dominance after the restart and they managed to double their lead in the 59th minute.

This time it was Aaron Appindangoye, who put his name on the scoresheet - beating South Sudan goalkeeper Jumma Gennaro to make it 2-0.

The Bright Stars were struggling to contain the Panthers and they conceded again with two minutes left on the clock.

Gabon's 3-0 victory was sealed by South Sudan's Hassan Martin, who scored an own goal in the closing stages of the encounter.
