Comoros kept their hopes of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations alive with a 2-1 win over Malawi in a Group B match at the Stade de Moroni on Saturday.

The win sees Comoros up to third in Group B with five points, three points behind second placed Cameroon while Malawi are last with four points.

Morocco tops Group B with ten points and are assured of a place at the 2019 Afcon next year following their 2-0 victory over Cameroon on Friday night.

At the Stade de Moroni on Saturday, the home side started like a house on fire with Mohamad El Farado opening the scoring for Comoros two minutes in, 1-0.

Comoros controlled the rest of the opening half, but their final pass in the last third was lacking and chances on goal were at a bare minimum after the first goal.

Malawi, on the other hand, offered very little in terms of attack in the first half and were lucky to get to the break only trailing by the one goal.

Malawi were a much better side in the second half and started created some goal scoring chances.

The visitors made their pressure tell around the hour mark when Patrick Phiri found the back of the net with a clinical finish to level matters, 1-1.

Malawi’s joy, though, was short-lived when Comoros re-took the lead in the 70th minute when a swift passing moved ended with Nasser Chamed finding the net after a deadly strike, 2-1.

Malawi tried to find their way back into the match, but Comoros defended stoutly to pick up their first win off their qualifying campaign.
