Nigerian midfielder Stephen Sunday has announced his departure from Major Soccer League club Real Salt Lake.
The Lagos-born player, who represented Spain at junior international level, confirmed that he will be leaving the Salt Lake side with the following Tweet:
“I had a wonderful three years with RSL. Farewell great team, great people. Wish you all the best in the coming season.”
Sunday joined Real Salt Lake in 2016 and has spent the past three seasons playing in the North American top flight.
The 30-year-old also told the Salt Lake Tribune that the club did not take up an option on his contract.
“They don’t want me,” he explained. “I cannot play where they don’t want me.”
Known as ‘Sunny’, the Nigerian made 25 appearances and contributed with one assist as Real Salt Lake reached the 2018 MLS Cup playoffs, where they were beaten 5-3 on aggregate by Sporting Kansas City.
A box-to-box midfielder, Sunday played for eight different clubs before joining Real Salt Lake, including Polideportivo Ejido, Valencia, Osasuna, Betis, Numancia, Bnei Sakhnin, CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria and Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
He has not played for Nigeria’s senior national team since making his international debut against Guinea in October 2010.
