EFL Championship side Wigan Athletic are keen on tying down Egyptian star Sam Morsy to a new contract.

And the Pharaohs player is not the only influential figure the Latics want to hand a new deal to, with former Manchester United starlet Nick Powell also a “priority” according to newly-installed executive chairman Darren Royle.

Both Morsy and Powell will have their current contracts with the club expire at the end of the season, freeing them up to speak to rival clubs from January with a view to securing a free transfer six months later.

Yet with both being key players for manager Paul Cook’s team, that is a situation the Latics cannot abide.

“Without going into too much detail, it is a priority, to find out what the players want,” said Royle, speaking publicly about his role for the first time since the club was taken over from the Whelan family by International Entertainment Corporation.

“Obviously it’s important to the fans to try and get a resolution as quickly as possible. It’s certainly something we’re working on.”

Royle – son of former Everton and Manchester City striker Joe – revealed that outgoing chairman David Sharpe already tested the waters prior to his departure. “I think it is an ongoing situation,” Royle explained.

Morsy has featured in 15 of Wigan’s Championship matches this season and contributed one goal, while Powell has four goals and four assist from his 16 appearances.
