Former Senegal international Omar Daf has been appointed as the new head coach of French Ligue 2 side Sochaux, the club offically announced on Sunday.

José Manuel Aira was officially relieved of his duties this past weekend following the club's 4-1 defeat at home to Auxerre. The result leaves the club in 18th place on the log standings and in the relegation playoff spot.

The club announced shortly after that Daf was entrusted with the head coaching role, having previously served as interim coach in 2013 and 2015.

The 41-year-old played 14 seasons for Sochaux in two spells for the club, and also previously coached the French club's reserve team.

Daf was capped 87 times by Senegal in an international career spanning 14 years and was notable part of the Teranga Lions side that reached the quarterfinals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea/Japan.

He was also part of Aliou Cisse's coaching team at the 2018 showpiece in Russia.
