Danny Jordaan, president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), has confirmed that the country has been asked by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to step in as hosts for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF announced on Friday that Cameroon have been stripped of hosting rights due to delays in construction of their stadiums, and added that countries wishing to bid for the 2019 AFCON finals have until the end of December to submit their bids.

Jordaan told the SAFA AGM in Sandton on Sunday that the continental football governing body has asked SA to seriously consider taking over as hosts, while reports from North Africa suggest that Morocco are also in the running for next year’s showpiece event.

The SAFA president returned to South Africa on Sunday after attending CAF’s Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting in Accra‚ Ghana, where the decision to axe Cameroon as hosts was taken.

SAFA say they will first meet with the country’s government to discuss the proposal before making a decision on whether to submit a bid.

However, vice-president and PSL chairman Irvin Khoza strongly believes that the association should try to land the hosting rights, adding that this will ensure that South Africa remains a major role player in continental football.

SA last hosted the AFCON in 2013 when they stepped in to replace Libya as hosts.
