Bidvest Wits beat Baroka FC 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon to move top of the Absa Premiership standings.
The victory moves the Clever Boys level on points with Orlando Pirates, but ahead of the Buccaneers on goal difference. Defeat leaves Bakgaga rooted to the foot of the table with their Telkom Knockout success starting to feel like a distant memory.
BIdvest Wits were the better team from the onset and dominated proceedings up until the opening goal on the cusp of half-time, in the second minute of added time.
Lehlohonolo Majoro well positioned to fire home Deon Hotto's glancing header for his first goal of the league season.
Bakgaga finally found their range in the 56th minute as Jemondre Dickens forced Darren Keet into a stunning save. The stop proved vital as the Clever Boys doubled their lead three minutes later.
Provider turned scorer as Hotto latched on a pin-point cross from Elias Pelembe with a rasping left-footed volley.
Baroka pulled a goal back in the 80th minute to make for a nervy finish. Tebogo Sodi with an arrowing header following a crisp cross from Thabiso Semenya to give the hosts a chance.
Bidvest Wits were dealt another blow soon after with skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo forced off following a nasty head injury - meaning the visitors had to end the match with 10 men.
Baroka duly pressed forward in search of the equaliser, but Bidvest Wits held firm for all three points and top spot.
