Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has labelled his side’s defending as weak, but believes they still have a chance of advancing into the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

The South African heavyweights were beaten 3-1 by Zambia’s Zesco United in Ndola on Sunday, in a CAF Confederation Cup first-leg, playoff round tie.

Khama Billiat netted an away goal for Chiefs, which keeps their hopes alive, but they will need to be much improved when they host Zesco for the return game at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite the two-goal deficit, the fact that Chiefs created so many chances has given Middendorp reason for hope.

“We created numerous chances today. If we get these opportunities again next week, we will have to take them," said the German tactician in the wake of the match.
"If we do that, we are still in with a chance. Our defensive work was a bit weak.”

Before Chiefs host the Zambians, they will be in domestic league action on Wednesday night when they face AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium.
