Mamelodi Sundowns will chase a second Absa Premiership victory in 2019 when they host Maritzburg United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on 16 January, kick-off at 19h30.

Sundowns got the New Year off to a perfect start – and retained their record as the only unbeaten team in the league this season – when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 away on January 5, with goals from Anthony Laffor and Lebohang Maboe.

The Brazilians have claimed just eight points from six home matches this season, with their last result as hosts a goalless stalemate against Baroka FC in December.

Maritzburg suffered a fourth successive loss – and saw their winless run extended to 11 matches – when they were beaten 2-1 at home by Free State Stars on January 9. It was Ea Lla Koto’s first away win of the season.

The Team of Choice has claimed just five points from seven away matches this season, with their last result on the road a 2-0 loss at provincial rivals Golden Arrows earlier this month.

In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and Maritzburg have met in 24 league matches since 2005/06. The Brazilians have claimed 15 wins compared to three for the Team of Choice, while six matches have been drawn. The Tshwane has claimed eight wins from 12 home matches in the rivalry, suffering just one defeat in the process.

Last season Sundowns took four points off United in the teams’ two league meetings, winning 1-0 at home in the first half of the campaign before playing out a 2-2 draw in Pietermaritzburg in the return. The Brazilians are unbeaten in their last 11 league matches against the Team of Choice.

Sundowns’ line-up from their 2-1 win over Chiefs on January 5: Mweene, Lebusa (Lakay 72'), Nascimento, Coetzee, Morena, Kekana, Mabunda, Sirino (Madisha 84'), Maboe, Laffor, Brockie (Mkhulise 72').

Maritzburg’s line-up from their 2-1 loss to Stars on January 9: Ofori, Farmer (Figuareido 87’), Onyango, Xulu, Sanoka, Mekoa, Makgalwa, Matsi, Kunene (Shandu 65’), Atouba (Ndlovu 82’), Fileccia.
