Former Ghana national team player Augustine Arhinful has dismissed calls for Kevin-Prince Boateng to be recalled to the Black Stars following his move to Barcelona.
The 31-year-old former AC Milan and Schalke player completed a shock loan move to the Spanish giants from Italian Serie A side Sassuolo earlier this week.
The transfer has promoted many Black Stars fans to call for Boateng’s return to the national team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The forward has not played for Ghana since their disastrous showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil – a tournament Boateng was sent home after an alleged falling out with coach James Kwesi Appiah.
Given that Appiah has returned to the coaching role with the Black Stars, it seems highly unlikely that Boateng will be brought back into the fold.
And Arhinful, who represented the likes of AshantiGold and Boavitsa in his career and is now a prominent pundit and analyst in Ghana, says those calling for KPB’s return are getting ahead of themselves.
“We must first ask Kevin whether he still wants to get back into the Black Stars before we start talking about that,” he is quoted by Ghana Web.
“For now the benefits we as Ghanaians will get is that, Kevin is being addressed as a ‘former Black Stars player’ in every media house both locally and foreign which I believe will lift the name of Ghana high.”
