Highlands Park secured a 3-1 win over AmaZulu FC on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the 2018/19 Nedbank Cup round of 32 match at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday.

As a result, the Lions of the North advanced to the Last 16, while Usuthu are eliminated from the tournament.

Usuthu looked lively in the opening stages of the match and Phumlani Gumede forced Highlands goalkeeper Marlon Heugh into an early save.

The Lions of the North grew in confidence as the match progressed and Mothobi Mvala's shot missed the target towards the half-hour mark.

The hosts were then awarded a penalty just after the half-hour mark and it was conveted by Emiliano Tade, who beat Heugh from the spot-kick to make it 1-0 to AmaZulu.

However, Usuthu's lead only lasted for eight minutes as Ryan Rae scored with a header to make it 1-1 for Highlands heading into the half-time break.

The two teams were locked at 1-1 at the interval.

The hosts started the second half brightly and they came close to scoring when Marc Van Heerden's free-kick hit the crossbar in the 51st minute.

However, the visitors still looked dangerous when they pushed foward and three minutes later AmaZulu keeper Siyabonga Mbatha denied Mokete Mogaila

AmaZulu should have grabbed a late winning goal through Bonginkosi Ntuli, who was brilliantly denied by Heugh with 19 minutes left on the clock.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time and extra-time followed.

The two teams continued to create chances in extra-time, but they could not convert their chances.

Highlands were reduced to 10 men when Sello Motsepe was sent off after making a dangerous tackle on Thembla Sikhakhane.

Ultimately, extra-time came to an end with the two teams locked at 1-1 and a penalty shooutout followed.

Highlands went on to secure their place in the Last 16 after beating AmaZulu 3-1 on penalties with Peter Shalulile scoring the last spot-kick.
