Asante Kotoko coach CK Akunnor has praised the club’s management for their run in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Ghanaian giants have reached the group phase of the continental competition for the first time since 2008 – and this despite having no competitive domestic football while the game in Ghana undergoes a restructuring process.

The Porcupine Warriors overcame Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 on aggregate in the first round in December last year, before ousting Cameroon heavyweights Coton Sport 5-3 over two playoff legs earlier this month.

Their reward is a place in Group C of the competition, where they will come up against Sudanese giants Al Hilal and the Zambia duo of Zesco United and Nkana FC.

Many pundits have lauded coach Akunnor for masterminding Kotoko’s progress, but the former Black Stars captain is refusing to take the credit.

“It’s not only me who deserves the commendation for reaching the group stages,” he is quoted by Football Ghana.

“Most of all the commendation goes to God, and then Dr. Kwame Kyei, the management and everyone.”

The 44-year-old also thanked the fans for their massive support throughout round one and the playoff phase.

“Let me also congratulate the supporters, their earnest support is massive and I hope it will continue whether good or bad times.”

Kotoko will open their Group C campaign on Sunday evening with a match away to Al Hilal in Omdurman.
