CS Sfaxien beat Etoile du Sahel 1-0 in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup Group B match at the Stade Olympique de Sousse on Sunday.
The win saw Sfaxien begin their group stage campaign on a good note, while their Tunisian rivals Sahel recorded a defeat on match-day one.
The deadlock was broken just nine minutes into the encounter between two Tunisian football giants, who have a combined eight Confederation Cup titles between them.
Aymen Harzi put Sfaxien into the lead with a decent finish to make it 1-0 to the visitors with Firas Chaouat grabbing an assist.
Sahel, who have clinched the Confederation Cup four times, had to find a way to restore parity after conceding early.
Karim Aouadhi had a chance to level matters in the 24th minute, but the Sahel midfielder missed the target.
The hosts pressed Sfaxien with the half-time break fast approaching and the next big chance fell for Iheb Msakni.
However, the 31-year-old midfielder also failed to hit the back of the net four minutes before the half-time break.
Sfaxien were leading 1-0 at the interval having held on to their slender lead in the first half.
The hosts started the second-half brightly and they were awarded a penalty just seven minutes after the restart.
Yassine Chikhaoui stepped up and he was denied by Sfaxien goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen from the spot-kick.
Mohamed Ben Larbi was then introduced by the hosts as they pushed for the equalizing goal with 22 minutes left.
However, Sfaxien, who have also lifted the Confederation Cup four times, had to contain the hosts in the closing stages of the game.
Ultimately, Sfaxien emerged 1-0 winners over Sahel thanks to Harzi's first-half goal.
