Gor Mahia moved up to third place on the Kenya Premier League log after they claimed a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Vihiga United in midweek.
Mahia made headlines across African football last weekend when they hammered Egyptian giants Zamalek 4-2 in Nairobi in their opening CAF Confederation Cup group phase match.
Nicholas Kipkirui, who scored against the White Knights, netted again in this match as he headed home in the 44th minute for the only goal of the game.
Mahia are now third on the log with 19 points from 10 matches, five points adrift of leaders Mathare United (who have played a game more).
Coach Hassan Oktay was unhappy with his team’s profligacy in front of goal, despite the crucial win.
“We played against a very stubborn side in their own backyard but the result is. There are areas I feel should be improved on as we go into our next fixtures,” he said.
Gor Mahia will return to continental action next Wednesday when they face Angola side Petro Atletico for their second Group D match in the Confederation Cup.
However, they will first face arch rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby on Saturday afternoon.
