Ittihad of Alexandria head coach Helmy Toulan blamed former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Toni Silva for the club's 3-0 defeat away to Al-Hilal in the Arab Club Championship this past weekend.
The Egyptian side now face an uphill task in the reverse fixture in Egypt next week if they are to progress into the semifinals of this year's competition.
Carlos Eduardo handed the hosts an early lead in Saudi Arabia before Silva squandered a gilt-edged chance for the visitors. The former Liverpool academy player burst through on goal, but could only succeed in guiding his resulting shot straight at the goalkeeper.
The Guinea international was made to rue the missed chance as Bafétimbi Gomis fired home a brace to give Al-Hilal a commanding lead heading into the second-leg.
“If Toni Silva had scored his one-on-one chance, the game would have completely changed,” Toulan said in his post-match press conference.
“When you face a big team like Al Hilal, you have to score every chance you get or you will regret it.
“I spoke before the game and said that Al Hilal have a very special type of players, everyone knows Al Hilal’s worth,” he concluded.
Silva left the Brazilians on bad terms last month following a short stint that yielded just two goals in 11 appearances across all competitions.
