Matchday 5 of the CAF Confederation Cup saw eight matches played across the African continent on Sunday, with two teams (RS Berkane and CS Sfaxien) securing berths in the quarterfinals.
The afternoon matches saw Nkana claim an emphatic 3-0 home win in the Zambian derby against Zesco United, a result which took them to the top of Group C on nine points (and eliminated Zesco), while Petro Atletico brought themselves back into quarterfinal contention with a 2-0 home win over NA Hussein Dey in Group D.
Al Hilal missed out on the chance to secure a quarterfinal berth when they were held 1-1 in Kumasi by Ghana’s Asante Kotoko in Group C’s early evening game, while 10-man Enugu Rangers held Salitas 1-1 in Ouagadougou in Group B.
Defending Confed Cup champions Raja Casablanca are still seeking their first win in Group A after being held 0-0 at home by compatriots Hassania Agadir, and Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien secured progression by defeating Etoile du Sahel 2-1 in a derby clash in Group B.
The night games saw big wins for RS Berkane and Zamalek. The former defeated AS Otoho 3-0 at their Municipal Stadium to secure progression as Group A winners, while the latter thrashed Gor Mahia 4-0 to both avenge a shock loss to the Kenyans last month and power their way to the top of Group D.
The group stage of the competition will wrap up with Matchday 6 fixtures next Sunday, March 17.
