Ghana midfielder Mubarak Wakaso believes the national team would receive a major boost should Kevin-Prince Boateng be recalled.
Boateng has been out in the cold since the Black Stars’ disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign, in the which the attacking midfielder was one of several players who had a falling out with coach James Kwesi Appiah.
The tactician is back in charge of Ghana’s national team and thus a recall for Boateng seems highly unlikely.
Yet the 32-year-old’s form in recent seasons has been exceptional. He enjoyed a fine spell with las Palmas in La Liga before being one of the driving forces behind Eintracht Frankfurt’s rise to prominence in Germany.
He then moved back to Italian football at the start of the 2018/19 season and made an impressive impact at Sassuolo – so much so that he secured a loan move to Barcelona earlier this year.
Boateng has since seen little playing time for the Blaugrana, but his experience and nous would be a great addition to a Ghana team looking to end a near 40-year trophy drought at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Wakaso, who plays in La Liga for Deportivo Alaves and is himself enjoying a fine campaign, insists Boateng should still be considered for the Black Stars.
“We need him. He’s the type of player we need. To be honest, for me, he has to come [to the AFCON in Egypt],” Wakaso told Football Made in Ghana.
“We need such kind of players in the team. We need his experience, quality and determination.
“We really need him. I can’t talk too much about it but we need him.
“For the past two years he’s been phenomenal and as we can see, he’s been a different player. He’s back to his former self,” he added.
