Benin secured a place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 win over Togo in their final Group D qualifier at the Stade de l'Amitié on Sunday.

The result sees Benin finish second in Group D on ten points, just one point behind Algeria who top the standings.

The loss for Togo ends their qualification hopes for the continental competition as they finish last in Group D on five points, one point behind third placed Gambia.

Benin started really positively and opened the scoring on Sunday after only 12 minutes courtesy of a clinical finish from David Djigla, 1-0.

Togo took control of the game after going behind, but were unable to make their pressure tell before the half time break.

The away side continued to press forward in the second half and finally found their reward with the equalising goal in the 71st minute thanks to a strike from Emmanuel Adebayor, 1-1.

Knowing they needed a win to secure qualification into the 2019 Afcon, Togo threw players forward in search of a winning goal.

However, in doing so, Togo left themselves exposed at the back and Benin took full advantage with the winning goal in the 83rd minute after Steve Mounie found the back of the net, 2-1.
