Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has admitted that his team was lucky to defeat Egypt in an international friendly played in Asaba on Tuesday night.
New striker Paul Onuachu scored the only goal of the game as the Super Eagles handed Pharaohs coach Javier Aguirre his first defeat since taking charge of the North Africans. It was also Nigeria’s first win over Egypt in 29 years.
Troost-Ekong ad the honour of captaining Nigeria in the absence of regular skipper John Obi Mikel and put up a fine display to help the team keep a clean sheet.
“Great win against Egypt tonight. Always a special to lead the boys out. Thanks for your support!” the defender stated on his Twitter account.
“Egypt are a great side, we were lucky to have scored a goal in the first minute,” he told Onsport TV channel.
The Udinese man also praised all the players who made their debuts during the game.
“The pitch was bad for us and for them but we were able to score an early goal and the new players played very well.”
Both Nigeria and Egypt are among the 24 teams which will play at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be played from 21 June to 19 July.
