SuperSport United were held to a 0-0 draw by Polokwane City in the teams’ Absa Premiership clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.
The result sees Matsatsantsa remain in sixth place on 40 points, while Rise and Shine rise one position to fourth on 41 points.
United had the first shot in anger as early as the second minute, with Aubrey Modiba firing over the target with a long-range effort, while City’s Charlton Mashumba warmed the hands of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams just before the quarter hour mark.
SuperSport had the ball in the back of the net on 17 minutes, but the lively Modiba was flagged offside, and a short while later George Lebese forced George Chigova into an outstanding save to keep the visitors on level terms.
Matsatsantsa continued to look the likelier scorers right up to the end of the first half, with Bradley Grobler heading just wide of the target, while Modiba and Evans Rusike were both denied in quick succession at close range, to see the game head into the interval locked at 0-0.
Early in the second half Polokwane should have claimed the lead, with a patient build-up ending in a chance for Nicholas Moutlong, but the defender ballooned his effort over the crossbar to leave the hosts unpunished.
Both sides made changes in an effort to spark their attacks to life, but the most notable effort in the remainder of the game was a speculative effort from SuperSport youngster Jamie Webber which was nowhere near to troubling Chigova.
United will be in league action again this coming midweek when they play away to Tshwane derby rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, while Polokwane have to wait until 24 for their next match, which will be at home to Bloemfontein Celtic.
