Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has dismissed rumours that coach Benni McCarthy will be leaving the club for either SuperSport United or the South African national team.

The former Bafana Bafana striker has been the Citizens’ head coach since June 2017, when he replaced Eric Tinkler.

McCarthy has led City to the MTN8 cup earlier this season, while they remain mathematical contenders for this year’s Absa Premiership title.

Comitis insists City have plans to possible extend McCarthy’s current contract – which ends in June 2020 – and has rubbished speculation that he may leave the club.

"I have not heard absolutely anything about that," Comitis told Kick-Off. "There's no discussions about it, there's no rumours, I haven't heard anything.

“From my side there's absolutely nothing that I have been notified of, nothing, I've been given no heads-up.

"It would be a complete surprise to me so at this stage there's nothing to discuss, he's got one more year on his contract, and we have every intention to sit with him and extend it. We will be hopefully sitting before the end of the season to extend it."

The City chairman added, "There's no discussion, he's got a contract... any club he would go to in South Africa according to me would just be going backwards, that's my opinion."
